Sad news from the world of Japanese cinema: Satoshi Kon, the anime director who first broke out with 1998’s PERFECT BLUE, died yesterday. He was only 47; the exact cause of death has yet to be reported.

Otakon Web Boards confirmed the news that first went out via Twitter. One of the great and diverse talents in the field of Japanese animation, Kon moved easily between cinematic nostalgia (his 2001 masterpiece MILLENNIUM ACTRESS) and humanistic dramedy (2003’s TOKYO GODFATHERS), but he’s best-known to genre fans for PERFECT BLUE, his debut feature. As opposed to most anime horror, which is concerned with vampires, demons and other supernatural creatures, BLUE is a realistic yet stylized, giallo-esque account of an obsessed, psychopathic fan terrorizing a pop singer. His most recent feature, 2006’s PAPRIKA, was a fantasy opus tinged with horror that explores the world of dreams. Gone too young, Kon will be greatly missed.
